What does hospice cost?
For most East Texas families, the answer is $0. Medicare and Medicaid cover hospice care in full. Answer two quick questions to see what it would cost in your situation.
Why hospice is free for most families
The Medicare hospice benefit was designed so that money never stands between a dying patient and comfort. Under Medicare Part A, hospice is covered at 100% — no deductible, no copay, no surprise bills for the hospice services themselves.
That coverage includes the things families worry most about paying for: nursing visits, the medications that control pain and symptoms, the hospital bed and oxygen and wheelchair, the aide who helps with bathing, the chaplain, the social worker, and bereavement support for the family for 13 months after.
Texas Medicaid follows the same rules. Most private insurance mirrors the federal benefit. And for families who fall through the cracks, we help apply for coverage — no one is turned away while that gets sorted out.
Common questions about hospice cost
How much does hospice cost with Medicare?
Nothing. The Medicare hospice benefit (Part A) covers 100% of hospice care for eligible patients — nurse visits, physician oversight, medications related to the terminal illness, medical equipment, aide visits, chaplain, and social work — with no copay or deductible.
Does hospice cost anything with Medicaid?
No. Texas Medicaid mirrors the Medicare hospice benefit. Eligible patients receive full hospice coverage with no out-of-pocket cost.
What if the patient only has private insurance?
Most private plans mirror the Medicare hospice benefit, so out-of-pocket cost is usually $0. Coverage varies by plan, so Azalea verifies your specific benefits before care begins.
Is there a cost if the patient is in a nursing home?
Hospice services themselves are covered. The nursing facility's room-and-board charge is separate from hospice — for some Medicaid-eligible residents, that room and board may also be covered.
What if the patient has no insurance?
Many uninsured patients still qualify for Medicaid or the Medicare hospice benefit, and Azalea helps families apply. Call us and we'll walk through the options — there's never a charge to find out what you qualify for.
