What Does Medicare Cover for Hospice?
For eligible patients, Medicare covers 100% of hospice care — including nursing, medications, equipment, chaplaincy, and bereavement support. Here is exactly what that means.
Who qualifies for Medicare hospice benefits?
To qualify for the Medicare Hospice Benefit, the patient must:
- Be enrolled in Medicare Part A
- Have a terminal diagnosis with a prognosis of 6 months or less if the illness runs its normal course (certified by two physicians)
- Choose comfort care rather than curative treatment for the terminal diagnosis
Texas has one of the highest hospice utilization rates in the country — 52.2% of Medicare decedents were enrolled in hospice at the time of death (9th nationally). East Texas families are not strangers to hospice care.
What is covered — at no cost to your family
What hospice looks like, by level of care
Hospice isn't one thing — it shifts to meet what your family needs. Every level below is 100% covered by Medicare for eligible patients.
Daily care at home
Regular nursing visits, home health aide, chaplain, and social work — wherever your loved one calls home.
Continuous care during a crisis
Extended in-home nursing during acute medical episodes — to manage symptoms without an ER trip.
Acute inpatient care when needed
Short-term inpatient care when symptoms can't be managed at home — then back home as soon as possible.
Respite for family caregivers
A planned, temporary inpatient stay to give family a break. Hospice is for the family too.
Common misconceptions about hospice
✗ “Hospice means giving up.”
The reality: Hospice means choosing a different kind of care — one focused on comfort and dignity. Research shows some hospice patients live longer than those who continue aggressive treatment.
✗ “Hospice is only for the last few days.”
The reality: The Medicare Hospice Benefit is available for the final six months of life. Families who enroll earlier consistently report better experiences.
✗ “You lose your doctor.”
The reality: The patient's attending physician continues to be involved. Azalea's medical director works in coordination with the existing care team.
✗ “Hospice is expensive.”
The reality: For Medicare patients, hospice is 100% covered — nursing, medications, equipment, social work, chaplaincy, and bereavement support. Most families pay nothing.
