01 —Serving Athens
Built for Athens families.
Athens is the gateway to two of East Texas's biggest lakes — Lake Palestine to the north, Cedar Creek to the south — and over the last two decades it has quietly become one of the most active retirement communities in the region. Many Henderson County families moved here for the water and the slower pace, and now they're caring for parents or spouses through serious illness, often a long way from the kids. Azalea Hospice serves Athens, Malakoff, Mabank, and Gun Barrel City with a local nurse who answers the phone and a team that comes out to the house — not a corporate hospice routing calls through a Dallas office.

03 —Common Questions
What Athens families ask first.
Do you serve the Cedar Creek Lake communities — Mabank, Gun Barrel City?
Yes. Cedar Creek Lake straddles the Henderson–Kaufman county line, and we serve the Henderson County side fully — Mabank, Gun Barrel City, Eustace, and the lake itself. Many of our patients are retirees whose family has scattered; the team comes to you.
How does Azalea coordinate with UT Health Athens?
UT Health Athens is the primary hospital for Henderson County, and we coordinate with their case managers and physicians for discharges. We handle the paperwork, talk to the attending, and make sure the medication and equipment are at the house before you get home.
Athens is closer to Dallas than Tyler — does it matter which hospice we choose?
It matters a lot. A Dallas-based hospice usually treats Athens as the far edge of its service area; we treat it as home. Our nurses live and work in East Texas, and we maintain local on-call coverage rather than dispatching from a metro office.
How much does hospice cost?
For Medicare and Medicaid patients, hospice is 100% covered — nursing, medications related to the terminal illness, equipment, aide visits, chaplaincy, social work, and 13 months of bereavement support. There is typically no cost to the family. Most private plans mirror the Medicare benefit; we verify your specific coverage before anything starts.
